(DEW Institute)

DEW Institute operates under CSR and shares the facilities common to CSR and Aurore on the CSR campus.

The purpose of DEW institute is to formally address the increasing number of requests we receive for internships and knowledge sharing in the three core areas of Design (architecture, planning and product design); Energy (wind, biogas, solar water heating, solar PV devices, solar thermal, alternative motors and vehicles) and Water (water resources management for the bioregion, waste water treatment systems) developed and implemented within the Auroville community.


Our internship projects and collaborations set out to explore innovations in sustainable technologies. Concepts are discussed leading to product research, development, testing within Auroville and prototyping. When feasible, a product or idea is considered for commercialization.


Dew institute aims to offer students (still studying or who have just finished) the possibility of exploring a wider vista both in terms of their subjects and their interaction with the surrounding world-scape through the vehicle of a novel internship in the international community of Auroville. The internship courses will offer participants creative freedom together with intensity and responsibility in modules of short-medium- long training duration. The end objective of every DEW program is not only to develop sustainable technologies but to also inspire sustainable ways of life.


Internships are available for applied research projects in Design, Energy and Water at the DEW institute. Students and interested individuals can apply for internships of 3 to 6 months duration. Participants are expected to contribute to the enhancement of DEW institute through research, development, innovations and documentation of their work.



Programs & Projects


Renewable energy:


Mission Tejas - To offer cleaner and better lighting options to those who presently use kerosene for their home lighting needs.

Solar thermal applications program - Developing several innovative solar thermal models for home and industrial use.

Solar PV street lighting program - Developing and testing solar PV street light devices, design of foundations, post and top battery box, use of no maintenance batteries fitted solar panel and with LED lights.

Pedal power generators - Development of several prototypes for use in places without electricity supply for water pumping, light, battery charging.

Absorption refrigeration.

Prototype dehumidifiers.

Brown gas machines - Testing of 3 Oxy-hydrogen generators for welding and cooking purposes.


Water and sanitation:


Hydrogeological studies for mapping the coastal watershed and aquifers, Water levels monitoring & data analysis - Ongoing hydro geological study for monitoring the bioregional water table fluctuations and proposing remedial measures.

Decentralised waste water treatment systems - prefab ferrocement waste water treatment modules; vortex systems, data collection, waste water analyses.

Emergency sanitation - prefabricated ferrocement toilets and waste water treatment systems for emergency situations.

Water resources management - study and implementation of groundwater recharge within the bioregion; Ground water quantification modeling, rainwater harvesting and storage, protection of water resources for Auroville bioregion area; assessment of hydrological and hydrogeological behavior for Auroville bioregion; Impact assessment of sewage discharge for Pondicherry Sewage farm.

Algal turf scrubbers for treating waste water, feasibility program - Developing an algae population for treating toxic waste water; Biofuel extraction from cultivated algae used for treating waste water effluent.
